Combining the Light weight & strength of Kevlar or Aramid Fiber & the durability of Fiberglass!
Our New Composite Blended Canoes feature a lightweight Fiberglass/ Aramid Fiber reinforced hull.
Outer layers of Fibreglass offer the best abrasion resistance and stand up well to the compressive forces generated by impacts to the outside of the hull. However, fibreglass is not very resistant to the tearing forces generated inside the hull by the same impacts. To solve this problem and lighten the hull we add Proprietory reinforments of Aramid Fiber to this model that offer excellent resistance to tearing. Our own Proprietory construction methods combine the best features of Fiberglass, Aramid Fibers & Resins, used in the best combination and resulting in one great lightweight and tough canoe! Our over 30 years of experience has led us to design our own canoe layup that is lightweight & still retains the maximum strength in the hull.
The trim is finished off with strong bright aluminum keyhole style gunwales secured with stainless steel rivets. Our canoes are fitted with floatation tanks at each end to prevent the canoe from sinking if turned over. Wood & nylon ,string or webbed seats for your maximum comfort. Portaging the canoe is made easy by the selection of carrying yokes we include and sell. (All this adds up to many years of enjoyment for a very modest investment.)
(order one today!) note: Kevlar is often commonly & improperly refered to as a type of material and it is in fact a DuPont Trademark for a type of Aramid Fiber. DuPont company was the first to introduce a para-aramid called Kevlar in 1973. We refer to it here by it's proper material name (Aramid Fiber )not a Brand name (such as Kevlar).
At Madawaska Canoes we use a Aramid Fiber Cloth from suppliers that is suitable for making boats and canoes . We do not feel that we should mislead you and say it is Kevlar as that is a trademark of only one company even though most people may refer to this commonly now as "Kevlar" in their canoes and it may in fact be or not be the Dupont Product Kevlar.

Making of Our Wooden Canoe Parts:
We start with rough cut 4/4 ash lumber and plane it to size. We then select the best grain showing in the wood to use for making each part, Yokes, Gunwales, Thwarts Seats, etc. We avoid any imperfections or knots in the wood as much as possible, after all it is natures wood and varies with each piece. We select the best grain for strength and best appearance and cut the wood to the proper blank width & length for each part we make. Our standard thickness for wood blanks is ¾ inches thick. Our yokes and thwarts are may be up to 7/8 inches if the wood permits.
We then cut shape and sand each part to its final shape. Some are coated with Spar Varnish or Water Based exterior varnish. Some are supplied as replacement parts unfinished. All replacement parts should be re-sanded and the ends re-varnished after you cut them to fit your Canoe. Our Premium Gunwales are oiled only upon installation as we know that varnish is not the best coating for Gunwales. They are made to flex and oiling at least twice a year is a better option. Ash wood will naturally yellow more with time. It is a strong yet flexible Hardwood and will usually bend before breaking making it one of the best woods for canoe parts. We also make some yokes in red oak or other woods as available to us. We can supply seats, yokes, thwarts and other parts to replace those ugly aluminum cross pieces in your canoe or parts to refurbish your canoe. Custom sizes made on request.

* Due to our custom "hand made" construction all models may have minor blemishes that do not affect the structure and the price may be adjusted to reflect any blemishes beyond our normal expectations.
* all of our models include a full 12 month warranty on defects in materials. 2nd's or discounted units carry a 90 day warranty.
* all pricing is Suggested List FOB St. Catharines and may be slightly higher when shipping and handling is added to other sales locations.
A canoe by any other name is still a canoe but a Madawaska Canoe is Unique, each one still custom made by hand !
